From the moment you walk up to the Blue Anchor, something seems a bit out of place, but in a pleasant and unexpected way. The building, oddly out of place in Delray Beach, both inside and out appears to be transplanted from the north side of London. One can’t help but ponder whether Jack the Ripper might have enjoyed a kidney pie and pint years ago in the same kind of place in Whitechapel. Warm and inviting with exposed beams and hints of British flair throughout, you feel like an old friend from the moment you walk in. I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered a snakebite, half ale, half hard cider, and perused the list of both British and domestic pub classics, but settled on the lamb Raj curry. Having lived in London years ago, the flavor and overall feel immediately transported me back to my favorite pub haunts. Slightly spicy, with a hint of sweet, and a helping of peas on top, and a fresh papadum on the side, the curry was everything I expected and left me wanting for more. The Blue Anchor is everything one might want or hope in a British style pub: inexpensive pints, great food warm, friendly service, and atmosphere that transport you across the ocean without the jetlag or expense. From the traditional fish and chips to bangers and mash, or a kidney pie, all the classics are well represented. This is not fine dining, but there is an undeniable sense of comfort and belonging, whether it’s your first visit or your twentieth.

The restaurant’s history and origin was very interesting with claims of ties to Jack the Ripper and Winston Churchill! The food is great Irish/English traditional fair and reasonably priced. We parked on the street (Atlantic Avenue) not too far from the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant is very striking in contrast to the typical Floridian style establishments in hues of neutral browns – as The Blue Anchor is black with blue header and lots of stained glass windows. The inside was themed in pub style – including the dark interior, inside seemed a bit worn. The food too is themed – traditional Irish/English fair. We enjoyed reading the menu and descriptions of ingredients. The food was decent; our favorite was the Bangers ‘n Mash. The portions were decent. The dessert, Blueberry Crumble was delicious. It came out piping hot and a la mode! Overall, I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for something out of the ordinary – Irish/English traditional fair – with live entertainment on weekends!
